free escorts
Escort aircraft not tied to the formation being escorted. Such escorts are free to seek out and destroy enemy aircraft, especially airborne enemy aircraft, along the route or in the general vicinity of the escorted aircraft. Distinguished from a close escort or a tied escort. Also known as a free-lance escort. See also close escort.
